Rock does not ask to be useful. It simply endures, through weight, through weather, through the slow passage of everything around it. Here, it becomes a kettle. Not by being smoothed or softened, but by accepting the iron handle that arches over it like a question, and the spout that emerges from its side with the blunt confidence of something that was always meant to be there.
