Dilip Das's practice was rooted in an intuitive understanding of landscape as an emotional and atmospheric experience rather than a literal representation. Working primarily in watercolour and mixed media, he layered transparent washes with expressive gestures to create compositions rich in light, movement, and mood. His paintings transformed rivers, fields, trees, and distant horizons into poetic spaces where colour and memory converged. Balancing spontaneity with technical precision, Das expanded the expressive potential of watercolour, creating works that continue to resonate for their quiet lyricism and enduring sense of place.
Biography
Born in 1950, Dilip Das was an Indian artist celebrated for his mastery of watercolour and his evocative interpretations of the landscape. After earning a Master's degree in English from Rabindra Bharati University in 1974, he studied Fine Arts at the College of Visual Arts, Kolkata
(1980–1985). Over a prolific career spanning more than five decades, Das presented numerous solo exhibitions across India and internationally, including London, Paris, Dhaka, Mumbai, and Kolkata. His works entered prominent institutional and private collections, including the British High Commission, Reliance Group, UTI, and several collections in India and abroad.
Widely admired for his lyrical treatment of nature, Das established himself as one of the significant voices in contemporary Indian watercolour painting.
