Works by Samir Sarkar
Artist Overview
The artistic practice of Samir Sarkar is characterised by figurative language that carries
psychological associations and explores issues related to identity, performances, and
multi-layered nature of human existence. Sarkar creates complex images that are dominated by
enigmatic characters wearing symbolic masks, hats, and other theatrical accessories that can
be understood as symbols of multiple identities that people create in society. Finding a delicate
balance between introspective approach and expressive visuals, these artworks explore issues
of concealment, vulnerability, power, and selfhood.
Primarily working with acrylic paint, Sarkar creates evocative images that are defined by formal
quality, stylised figuration, and carefully modulated colour palette. The influence of classical
painting tradition and Egyptian visual arts reveals itself through poses used in his paintings and
the way he incorporates elements from these cultures into his artwork, but the artist always
makes sure that these works have a contemporary Indian flavour. As a result, the language of
art created by Samir Sarkar is theatrical and reflective, and allows the viewer to discover an
interesting dialogue between emotionality and symbolism
